Most designs
today contain one or more embedded memories, such as SRAM, DRAM, ROM, EEPROM,
or other types. In most designs, these memories are custom structures that
are designed using hand-crafted, optimized layout structures. This makes
sense, because in many designs the majority of transistors are part of
these structures, so that optimizing these areas will have a significant
effect on the total die size. Nevertheless, these optimized structures
represent significant design effort and design time.
Memory compilers
are specific to particular technologies. To convert a compiler, all the
leaf cells must be adjusted to the new technology, and they must fit together
for all configurations. Because complex compilers can contain several hundred
base cells, manually converting the cells requires multiple iterations
for an optimum solution that is time consuming and therefore no longer
acceptable.
